You were born during a scare
Well it changed how you grew
Always fearing what's in the corner
Keeping eye on the shadows til you became a man
Well they turned out the lights
Still you continued your work
You must persist writing these sad songs
Thinking that you'll trap all your bad luck within their rhymes
Don't you know that songs only work
When you realise the words
You're unsure you'll settle the score on such terms
Or could you believe the stories you tell?
Can you believe them yourself?

The Prisoner's Dilemma

Looking in the mirror
The right shoulder
Her initials inlaid a long time ago
Cowered in the corner
A week later
Damned to remember the things that I've done
He hears the raid alarm in the dead of night ring
Wailing into feather and bone
Keeping out the hum of the heavy shell
Now back away slowly and keep your head down
My girl, you're just like your grandmother
(oh, I know)
And she was all that I ever wanted
(well, it shows)
And here is the ring that I gave to her
(oh, be still)
Please see it returned to its true owner
(well, I will)
On the morning after
The light breaking
Dares to reveal a place in the wall
Buried under mortar
A red letter
Lies there unopened, in spite of it all
